HOLIDAY REMINDERS

There are some essential holiday safety tips and advice we all need to remember as we celebrate the holiday season…
·         When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label “Fire Resistant”.
·         Check all tree lights-even if you’ve just purchased them-before hanging them on your tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.
·         Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.
·         Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A flash fire may result as wrappings ignite suddenly and burn intensely.
·         Keep a list with all of the important phone numbers you or a baby-sitter are likely to need in case of an emergency.
·         Manage stress. Balance work, home, and play. Get Support from family and friends. Keep a relaxed and positive outlook!
As a last note, we would like you to remember that 7 Day Dental will be open during the holidays for any type of emergency, and trust us there are emergencies… take a look at this video.

Come and visit us over the holidays

"Black Friday" is more commonly known as "Plaque Friday," learn why

As most of you already know, this coming Friday is “Black Friday.” It is the day where retail stores offer their best deal on special items, and their net loss numbers in red become net income numbers in black. But while thousands of people help retail stores turn their number back to black, their number in their bank accounts are turning red.

In our dental office Black Friday is more commonly known as “Plaque Friday.” Why? Well this is the day that many people spend a ton of money on gifts for friends and family and then unfortunately will have a very difficult time taking care of necessary dental treatment.

Please remember that your beautiful smile needs to last forever! Don’t let “Plaque Friday” take a “bite” out of your dental health. For more information about how you can start taking care of your teeth today please go to our web address at www.7daydental.com or to find the best deal that we offer, follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/7DayDentalEuclid, www.facebook.com/7DayDentalLincoln or www.facebook.com/7DaydentalLadera.

Kelly Clarkson's Root Canal

On February 2, 2011 the amazing American pop rock singer and songwriter Kelly Clarkson posted this update on her Facebook “Emergency root canal … I’ve had better days,” she wrote. “Oral surgery = sadness.” As you can see on the photo she posted with her update Kelly did not seem very happy to visit the dentist on those conditions.

A few hours earlier, Kelly posted another photo of the bottom half of her face with the caption, “I just got finished at the dentist and I can’t feel this portion of my face. It feels so weird and I keep thinking I’m drooling on myself which is so incredibly attractive, I’m aware.”

As you may have already figure it out from Kelly’s experience, root canal could be a very tedious and painful procedure. The positive side of it is that it could be prevented if you follow the right steps. In this article you will learn all you have to know about root canals and what are some ways to prevented that from happening you.
  1. Strong pain upon chewing or pressure
  2. Prolonged sensitivity with cold or hot foods and beverages
  3. Darkening color of a tooth
  4. Swelling and tenderness on gums
Do you know what a root canal is?
A root canal is done to save a tooth that has decay or has become infected. An infected tooth that needs a root canal will eventually develop an abscess which is painful and causes excessive swelling.
When abscesses occur there will be pus that fills the gums and create the abscess at the end of the root of the tooth. The only purpose of the nerve is to give sensation of hot and cold and not having a nerve in a tooth will not affect the overall function of the tooth. The actual root canal can be done with a general dentist, but in some cases will require an endodontist which is a doctor who specializes in performing root canals.
The specialist is able to work with more involved and difficult root canals and have all the appropriate equipment to perform the actual root canal. When a root canal is done the nerve is removed and a post and buildup must be done to reinstate the strength of the tooth where the nerve once was. The tooth is then sealed and will involve a final restoration. The final restoration will include placing a post and crown on the tooth to prevent it from breaking and protecting it properly to function effectively.

How can you prevent getting a rooth canal
The most important part of a root canal or any dental treatment is to detect it early. It is crucial to get dental examinations every 6 months to ensure all procedures are getting taken care of properly. If a root canal is needed there are different options about how to restore the tooth and these options should be discussed with your dentist.

Having a healthy oral hygiene by brushing and flossing everyday and seeing your dentists every six months, is the key to abstain from any oral surgery or procedure. 7 Day Dental has great staff that is ready to answer any question you may have, and we are open for you every day of the year. Dentures Vrs. Implans, Which One is Best for You

Dentures are the replacement for missing teeth and there are many facts about dentures which are misunderstood.

Dentures may seem like a permanent solution but the actuality is that they usually last about 7 years. Initially dentures fit tight and make drastic changes for a patients smile as seen below but over time they begin to change the patients bite. Over the years bone loss occurs and the dentures begin to be less visible and almost seem to have sunk into the mouth making the lip appear to fold inward. Bone loss occurs and as the bone is reabsorbed the denture has less support and will begin to sit higher on the top and lower on the bottom.
In order to accommodate these changes the patient will begin to bite differently and as the lower jaw moves forward the mouth appears more like just an opening without shape. Pain occurs after continual stress on the facial muscles creating sore spots and headaches. New dentures every 7 years are beneficial because they can be reshaped and made to fit tightly again. It is important to have dentures with retention and stability which keep the teeth from having vertical and horizontal dislodgement. Wearing loose dentures for a long time will create soft flabby gum tissue and this will cause the denture to lose its stability. Getting the dentures relined every two years can help with this problem by creating a firmer denture base.

Expected changes with dentures are gums with shrinkage, worn out dentures, and a changed bite. Denture patients usually have problems with their bottom dentures and tend to only wear their upper denture since the lower denture is more difficult to be retained. Another major decision to be made is to decide whether plastic or porcelain teeth are more suitable for your lifestyle. Porcelain teeth do not wear but the plastic denture base make it difficult for the teeth to adhere to the base. Plastic teeth with a plastic denture base are durable and have less problems associated with them but should be replaced every five to seven years for best results.
A most stable type of denture would be one with mini implants which retains the denture in position. These types of implants can be inserted into the jawbone in one visit and are less invasive than other implant procedures.
The ideal treatment is subject to each person and their lifestyle but obtaining the necessary knowledge is crucial and can be done by consulting with your dentist.

Learn all you have to know about canker sore

What is an ulcer and what does it look like? What is the best treatment available, and what is the difference between them all?

I just recently treated a patients for a dental cleaning, and before I started the prophy or most commonly known as the teeth cleaning, she mentioned to me she had a sore that had been creating a lot of pain for the last 7 days that caused her pain and discomfort on her upper lip. I quickly looked at the sore and notice that it was an ulcer. I recommended treating the ulcer with the dental laser. After the patient accepted, I started the procedure, which was quick and painless. The patient was extremely happy and was pleased with how fast the procedure was.
According to current research from oral pathology for the dental hygienist (forth edition). (Ibsen and phelan) Aphthous ulcers also known as “canker sores” frequently occurs in three different forms of episodes. Here they are:
  • Minor ulcer: is distinguish because it grows up to 1 centimeter, occurs on the movable mucosa, for example the labial mucosa cheeks or the tongue soft palate and oropharynx.
  • Major ulcer: is of course larger than one centimeter in diameter and a lot more painful than a minor ulcer sore. Just like the minor ulcer, occurs on the movable mucosa as well.
  • Herpetiform: are very tiny mostly about 1 to 2 mm. They are called herpetiform because they resemble ulcers that are caused by herpes simplex virus. Location is important to distinguish between recurrent ulcers associated with systemic disease and the herpetic form. The herpetic form appear on the hard palate and gingival.
**Important: The canker sores produces vesicles that are contagious until they dry and crust during the healing phase.

This is the laser machine we have @ 7 Day Dental

Treatment

The most common treatment are found in the over the counter medication at any pharmacy. For the herpetic canker sores there is Abreva or prescription Acyclovir. The herpetic form cannot be treated with the dental laser because it is caused by the herpes simplex virus which lies dormant in the trigeminal ganglia of the mandible. The machine on the right was the one I used for the patient I previously talked about.

Warning!

When the canker sore first appears most likely due to sun light or stress, you will feel a tingling sensation called the prodromal period. This phase is considered contagious and precautionary measures should be taken to prevent transmission of the virus. Avoid touching the canker sore or kissing until the vesicles dry.

Aphthous & Trama

Aphthous Ulcers are common and occur in about 20% of the general population.
Trama is the most commonly reported type of ulcer. Cause usually by over aggressive brushing, eating something hot or spicy, emotional stress, or eating citrus fruits that have high acid content, such as lemons, oranges. Apthous ulcers can also be caused by systemic disseases such as, Behcet sundrome, Crohn disease, Ulcerative colitis, Cyclic neutropenia, Sprue (gluten intolerance), Intestinal lymphoma.
Dental laser can treatment can be use to treat the non herpetic form in just 1 minute with no more pain whatsoever! It is now available at 7 Day Dental!
7 Day Dental is the standard for TRUSTED Dental excellence!
