Are Your Teeth In You Wallet?

Many of you may not remember about the incident that happened to a Wal-Mart’s costumer in March of 2009, when after buying a wallet he found ten teeth in one of the compartments of the wallet. He reported the case to the police and the police started investigating this unusual case.
After reading this story I was very amazed at the idea of “someone” placing teeth in a wallet. But then I started thinking of how many people have their teeth in their wallets rather than in their mouths. In other words, many people now spend thousands of dollars on dental treatments but not because of a necessary dental hygiene but rather because they have a severe infection cause by the careless attitude they had towards their teeth in the past.
How many people have their teeth in the wrong place?
As a dentist I see many patients who come to us worried because they have a growing pain that is almost unbearable. The pain that they are feeling is the cause from not taking care of their teeth. For patients like this, their teeth were not ever in their mind, and now that an infection is causing pain they have now remember about their teeth, and their teeth are now eating all the money in their wallet.
Here at 7 Day Dental we encourage people to take good care of their teeth now, and not pay thousands of dollars later. Come visit us any time of the year, since we are open 365 days of the year. 6 Things You Need To Know About Your Toothbrush

One of the useful tools that have to take care of your teeth is our toothbrush. Even though many of us don’t understand the importance of taking good care of our toothbrushes, it is important for me as a dentist to address this issue because I believe that people would understand the necessity of maintaining and protecting our toothbrushes in order to have healthy teeth. Here are some ways in which you can protect your mouth by taking good care of your toothbrush.
  1. Do not leave your toothbrush on the bathroom countertop. When the toilet is flushed airborne bacteria can travel up to six feet away landing on the countertop and on the toothbrush. Therefore toothbrushes should be stored in the medicine cabinet or in a drawer.
  2. Rinse the brush with clean tap water after using it and allow it to air dry and store it in the upright position.
  3. Do not place a cap on the toothbrush.Placing a cap on your toothbrush will enclose moisture and create greater amounts of bacteria which harvest microorganisms.
  4. Do not share your toothbrush.Sharing your toothbrush or accidentally using someone else’s toothbrush is the worst way to maintain good oral hygiene. A significant amount of germs get swapped when this occurs and can also happen if more than one toothbrush is stored in the same area.
  5. Replace your toothbrush on a regular basis. The ADA recommends replacing it every 3 to 4 months but should always be replaced once the bristles become frayed or worn even if it is sooner than this time frame.Children’s toothbrushes should be replaced more frequently since children are not aware of sanitary concerns. Everyone’s toothbrush must be replaced after having an episode of the flu or a cold. Not replacing the toothbrush leads to re-infection since the microbes remain present.
  6. Don’t forget to brush twice a day and floss at least once a day to maintain a clean mouth.

Is social media affecting the way we communicate with other?

Text messaging, twittering, and emailing have become the prominent method of communication.

In the past, getting in contact with a person involved writing a letter in a formal format or calling them on the phone.  Now, communication with an individual can be as simple as an acronym to get straight to the point.  Text messaging and postings on Facebook are the most common places to see acronyms such as: ttyl (talk to you later), lol (laugh out loud), tmi (too much information), and many more.  Sometimes single letters can be equivalent to an entire word!  These acronyms are meant to convey a short straightforward message or display an action which would otherwise be difficult to depict through text.

What is important to consider is whether this new way of writing is changing how we communicate.

Are we becoming more antisocial?  Or are we becoming too involved with our gadgets and less involved with our peers?

People are constantly living through a virtual world where they pay more attention to their electronic devices rather than trying to have interpersonal communication with one another.  Social media is in fact changing how we communicate but not in such a manner in which it ruins our relationships.

The changing of communication methods has not affected how we communicate in a negative manner just in a different way.  Conversations are becoming more straightforward and by using less words.  Sometimes statements as those seen on Twitter can impact the people reading them just as a book or article would do.  Creativity and simplicity are becoming the main priority of getting a message exposed.  The most factors to maintaining good communication is to remember to use social networking etiquette and not pay more attention to your phone than the person in front of you.

Learn the advantages and disadvantages of bone grafting

What is bone grafting?

Bone grafting is done to preserve and restore the area where natural bone has been diminished or lost.  Getting bone grafting done will increase the bone density at the graft site which will allow for greater stability of a dental implant or bridge.  Dental implants require the foundation to be stable and therefore bone grafting is essential for placing dental implants.  In order to determine where the bone grafting is needed a dentist must review the x-ray and compare it to what is seen visually.  The grafting is then placed in the area and is sealed and stitched back into its place.

Healing time

This is crucial to the success of bone grafting and the progress made must be checked by the dentist with x-rays to discover the bone growth.  The healing time for bone grafting varies from patient to patient but will usually take a few months.  Once the bone has stabilized and grown into the socket properly, the implant can then be placed in the sturdy bone.  Bone grafting allows a level workplace for future dental treatments to be done.

Alloplastic Grafting

There are different options for grafts, but the most common is Alloplastic grafting.  Alloplastic grafts are made from synthetic materials which emulate natural bone.  This type of graft does not create any risk of disease transfer and can be done in one procedure.  Bone grafting is extremely beneficial and is a procedure with promising results.  To discuss other bone grafting options, it is best to consult with your dentist.

4 things parents must do after the holidays

Christmas is a holiday that children look forward every year, and become very excited because they get to open up presents and eat all source of sugars. Your responsibility as a parent is to make sure that your kids does not overboard with all the sugar that is available that night. Because we care about our parents, we have come up with 4 suggestions on how you, the lovely parent, can take care of your child’s teeth after the Christmas holidays:
1.       Check the candy carefully to make sure it is still in its original packaging. Any candy that appears to have been opened or partially exposed should be discarded.
2.     Types of candy are also important to consider. All rock hard candy must be taken away since it is the type of candy which will break your child’s teeth. Sticky candy is also bad because it can stick to a child’s braces and biting surface of the tooth. This type of candy might not break a tooth but it will cause decay.
3.      Moderation is also crucial to keeping healthy teeth after Halloween. The candy must not be eaten all in one sitting. It must be eaten in small portions and not alone. A healthy meal must be consumed to lessen the effects of the sugary candy.
4.      Make sure your child brushes and flosses after eating the candy. Brushing will remove any sugar remnants and will provide fluoride to fight cavities. Flossing is also equally important because it will remove any plaque that can cause decay between teeth.
Fluoride mouthwash is important because it will provide protection for the tooth by creating a barrier for decay. Rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash will allow for cavity protection as your child sleeps.
